HIBS Win Campbell Shield

Hutt International Boys School

Hutt International Boys’ School have won the Campbell Shield as Hutt Zone boys’ athletics champions.

At a wet and windy Newtown Park in Wellington, HIBS defeated Hutt Valley High School by 27 points, 150-123. Points are awarded on a 5-1 basis with each winner gaining five points. The competition also includes intermediate students and six other schools’, including St. Bernard’s College.

The winners from the Hutt Zone move on to represent their schools in the Regional championships next Wednesday, also at Newtown Park. The Regional’s are the main qualifier for Nationals in December.

Perhaps the star of the meet was Finn Seeds. He won the under 12-13 800m and 1500m by huge margins. In the 800m he enjoyed a 13 second advantage over his nearest rival while in the 1500m he smashed the field by 21 seconds and broke the previous event record by 11 seconds.

HIBS

Nick Smith, formally of St. Patrick’s College Silverstream, won the 100/200m double in the 16-19 category for Hutt Valley High School. A National champion in both events two years ago he run 11.14 for the 100m which is below his best, but sharp enough given the tough weather conditions.
